Boat Charters to Islolated Beach off Providenciales
If seeing one of the most beautiful beaches in the Turks and Caicos Islands sounds like a dream come true, then plan a short boating trip to Half Moon Bay just a mile or so off Blue Haven Marina on Providenciales.
Half Moon Bay gets its name for the crescent-shaped beach of soft white sand that it forms between Little Water Cay and Water Cay. Between the 1960s and 1990s, this area was actually a sand bar with free-flowing water passing through a channel between the two cays. The channel was formed by geographic movement resulting from the damage caused by Hurricane Donna in 1960. Though it was one of the worst storms to pass through the area, Hurricane Donna claimed no lives in the Turks and Caicos. However, it was instrumental in reshaping some of the cays and waterways.
Today, as you cruise to Half Moon Bay, you are surrounded only by calm turquoise ocean, gleaming white sand, and low limestone cliffs. It is bright, beautiful and tranquil indeed.
What’s the Best Way to See Half Moon Bay?
Getting onto the water is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Turks and Caicos islands have to offer. Kayaking and stand up paddleboarding are options for a great workout, but be aware of tides, currents and wind conditions to ensure that you can return safely.
A better way to explore Half Moon Bay is through a boat charter that includes stops at other magical locations around Providenciales. As you near the low limestone cliffs of Half Moon Bay, you’ll glimpse palm trees and casuarinas trees along the shore and a variety of interesting wildlife like rock iguanas, herons, egrets, pelicans, and ospreys.
The beach on the northern side of this strip is sheltered by the barrier reef close to the shore. Here the water is warm and shallow, perfect for swimming. When you see the indescribable blue colour of the water and feel the incredibly soft sand underfoot, you’ll want to stay here for hours.
On the southern side is a shallow lagoon where the water is warm and crystal clear. It’s ideal for a private picnic for two and, for those feeling more adventurous, there are limestone caves for exploring.
